Tutorial Tuesday: How to pick up and purl stitches.

Okay, I just can't seem to get over the whole picking up stitches thing. Today, I'm going to show you how to pick up and purl stitches on Stockinette fabric.

Before You Start: Make sure the wrong side (WS) is facing and the yarn is in front. In this example, we will be using the green yarn to pick up and purl stitches from the teal area. (The yarn is Rowan Felted Tweed.)

Step One: Insert the needle into the fabric from the BACK to the FRONT. Remember, the back is the right side (RS), or public side, and the front is the WS. Just like any time you pick up and knit, when you pick up and purl you want to make sure to get both strands of the "v" on the needle to avoid holes.



Step Two: Wrap the yarn around the needle as if to purl . . .



. . . and complete the purl stitch as usual.



That's it! Complete steps one and two until you have picked up and purled the required number of stitches. All of the rules from picking up and knitting apply to picking up and purling, such as how to pick up a certain amount of stitches evenly.
